BWI Systeme GmbH was established in order to handle all outsourced IT projects of the Bundeswehr (German military organization). BWI Systeme GmbH is owned by IBM Deutschland GmbH. Beside the management of the systems at Bundeswehr, BWI Systeme also uses Nexus products for its own purposes.
Needs & Benefits
The Nexus suite is the central PKI system in the top-secured trustcenter of the Bundeswehr (German military) and covers all parts of the life cycle management of the eDTA (electronic military ID card) for 250,000 soldiers and employees:
- Nexus Certificate Manager (CC EAL3+ evaluated and confirmed according to the German law of signature; SigG) handles the issue of all certificates, the electronic personalization and the life cycle management of the eDTA.
- Nexus Servant OCSP delivers OCSP information according to V-PKI policy and German law of signature (SigG).
- Nexus Time Stamp Server provides time stamps within the law.
- Nexus Personal is used as client middleware for the usage of crypto graphical functionalities for the eDTA.
One major challenge was the the realization of the security demands based on the administration PKI and the general conditions of the Geman law of signature for the issuing of qualified signatures.
A further challenge was the integration of Nexus CM in a proprietary HR system based on its CM-SDK interface.
This huge project was realized together with partners like T-Systems and BWI/IBM. Today, BWI Systeme GmbH handles all Nexus relevant projects in order to extend the existing project and to maintain the infrastructure.
